To start off, I’m apologize about my face in these pictures. I tend to be giggling or just trying my best to keep a neutral face (which I’m not used to). Anyway, today’s pose is Easy pose. The Sanskrit name is Sukhāsana. The reason it’s one of my favorite poses is believe it or not, I think you need to be more attentive in this pose. It’s really easy to slouch back and just let your body naturally sink in.
Really, you have to focus on good posture, by keeping the vertebrae aligned, and distribute the weight as evenly as possible. It’s also a nice pose because you can get a lot of extra stretch from rolling your neck for example and there are a lot of modifications give one’s abilities.
For example, you can sit up with a block, a bolster (or pillow at home), or a blanket to raise yourself up so it’s a little bit less pressure on your lower back. There is also a really nice chair modification where you align your hips, with one foot flat on the floor and crossing the opposite ankle over your knee and taking a minute or so in that pose. I know in my picture my hips don’t look aligned, but I took this picture about several times even when paying more attention to it, and it didn’t look great. But that’s okay, because it’s more important that I know the pose was done correctly and that it was right for my body.
A benefit of this pose is that it helps strengthen your back. It’s also a nice calming pose that also stretches the knees and ankles. Anyway, I hope you enjoy Day 1. Take a few minutes now and get yourself comfortable in Easy Pose, focus on your breath, and enjoy this time. Give yourself some gratitude for starting this month long adventure with me.
