Why the Name, “The Resilient Yogi?”

There are a ton of reasons why I chose, “The Resilient Yogi.” I wanted something unique. It needed to be something that not only resounded with me, but hopefully my followers. It still needed to be relevant to yoga as well and then I thought about it: we have to be resilient both on and off the mat. Physically, when we are practicing, we need to be flexible (whatever that may be for us). It’s about adapting to poses for our body and sometimes pushing our limits in a healthy way. Mentally, we need to shut off the outside world and go within: from focusing on our breathing, to silencing our brain from the millions of thoughts racing through it. It’s more difficult some days: but we somehow finish our practice.

But we must also be resilient outside of the studio too. Every single person has had obstacles at some point in their life. Whether it’s been huge life changes, a loss of a loved one, or a job we hate, we all made it to the other end: even if it didn’t feel like we would. We are stronger than we like to give ourselves credit for (myself included). Heck, even right now our world has been turned upside down, but we’re getting through it one day at a time.

Finally, the other reason I chose this name is from my own experiences. This past year kicked my butt; I struggled with a hard break up, medical issues, and moving for what felt like the entire year. Yoga and meditation were always my sounding board for those tough days. I got on the mat even when it felt like I could just break down. Some days, it was the only thing that made me feel okay. However, I weathered the storm and became a better person for it.

I hope I can teach my followers and my future students this lesson one day: you are strong, and you will get through this suffering. It’s a part of the Four Noble Truths (which come from teachings of Buddha) I’ve learned about in my training. Essentially, the Four Noble Truths discusses how life is suffering, but it will end (there are details of how we get there and how it ends but let me know if you would like a blog about it). Suffering could be two minutes or a year-long: but you are resilient, and you will be stronger after your hardships. I hope that answers why I chose my name and don’t forget to be resilient! 😊
